Who: Adrian Veidt, a.k.a. Ozymandias
What: His supervillain-trope busting bombshell in which he revealed his evil master plan to the heroes after having carried it out
When: August 1987
Where: "Watchmen," issue 11, page 27
Why it's a great moment: For the first selection in our list of the best of the worst moments in supervillain history, we had to go big. It's almost a cliche, especially after this year's "Watchmen" movie, to cite perfume and toy maven Adrian Veidt's big "Oh shit" moment -- in which he nonchalantly assures that he has wiped out half of New York's population with a giant space octopus -- as one of those at the peak of villainy.
But there's a reason. It's undeniably badass, even when you consider Veidt's do-gooder motive of trying to bring the world together to take on an alien threat and his billowy purple attire (with tiara and everything). And the really great thing about it? All he's doing is talking. I know that, if I were really trying to pull off a villain-defining moment, I'd be shooting at a hot-air balloon while riding a motorized shark up a fifty-foot ramp in the Arctic Ocean. But Ozymandias, all he had to do was have a chat with two old buddies. Man.
It's such a well-known moment that it's inspired some pretty great parodies, too.
Ozymandias, the ISS salutes you.
