Villainy's Greatest Moments: Dr. Doom Saves His Mother's Soul

by King Oblivion, Ph.D.

drdoomhell.jpgWho: The one and only Victor Von Doom

What: Going to hell (with an initially reluctant Dr. Strange), saving his mother's soul and getting out with no debts to anyone

When: November 1990

Where: Dr. Strange/Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment

Why it's a great moment: Doom don't take no shit from anybody, even if it's the devil himself. Especially if the Mephisto is holdin' on pretty strong to his mother's soul in hell. So Doom calls up Dr. Strange, convinces him to help in the cause, and pretty much right after they get there, sells Strange out, offering him up in exchange for his mom's soul.

Doom's mom hears about the sell-out tactic, gets all huffy and disowns him. Mephisto's all like, "Strange, you gotta see this," and restores his consciousness. That gives Strange a chance to use a device Doom hid under his cloak to break out of his imprisonment (Doom set it all up to just look like he had sold out Strange -- he knew he needed him to get out of there).

There's a big fight, Doom clocks Mephisto with some anti-matter, then Strange hits the devil with the knockout punch of Doom's mom's released soul, which goes to heaven. The two escape and Doom tells Strange he don't owe him shit, and he ain't gotta go home but he can't stay in Latveria. He used Strange to get what he wanted and all he had to lose was his mother's eternal love and respect.

And for that, we salute him.

The amazing thing is that Doom teamed up with Strange, saved his mother's soul, beat the devil, and he pulled it off without getting even a little smidge of hero on him. Dude could rescue a kitten and he's still manage to come off as both awesome and evil.

Wait, this should be an award to Doom's mom. Think about it--the guy goes to save her from Hell, and how does she repay him? Hates his guts.

He went HERO for her, and she hates him? Evil, man. Evil. Hilarious and evil.
